It could have been prevented if the South didn't put all their eggs in the "they'll never do it" category. Lincoln did it.
It was necessary to preserve the Union - save the South and free the slaves.
No one has the right to "own" another human being.
I really hate that word "own" when referring to a person.

They could have reached a comprimise , allowing states to enter and leave the slavery issue to the states to regulate, or other possible considerations to prevent the seccession , tho post-missouri comprimise seccession and then war was probably inevitable, tho the union could have recognised the confederate states to secceed ,which was their legal right, and continued negotiations to refrom the union later. The war was over states right not slavery, tho slavery was one of the major issues that the federal goverment was trying to infringe the states rights to govern, tho the attempts to place duties and tariffs on goods produced in the south was as important or more so to southerners,it all came down to states rights versus federal powers...By comprimising with the south and then working to increase the south industrial base, dimenishing its need for a massive labour force, the slavery issue would have died on its own, left alone without any action it was dying out already as the population and machanical capacity of the south grew.By the civil war only a very small percentage of southerners owned slaves, and a percentage of those would have gotten rid of the slaves ,if there had been anywhere for the slaves to go, there simply wasnt any work to be had for a freed slave, in the north or the south, there were already 3 men for every job opening that paid wages. Its not PC these days, but the average freed slave, was a lot worse off post civil war than they were when they were slaves, probably for the first 10-20 yrs after the war.

There isn't a reason why the Civil War wasn't necessary since the issue of slavery was not dealt with when the nation was formed in 1776. Since slavery began to spread as the number of states grew along with the nation, it became more of a problem as the north became more industrial as the south remained remedial in their advances in relation to the country overall. Also, most southern states, Souther Carolina in particular, refused to centralize themselves with one government; this is not a main reason the war was fought though...

Despite the South's affirmation that if Lincoln was elected , the South would secede from the Union the North was willing to compromise over some parts of the division of our country
Lincoln's original intent was to preserve the Union and to keep slavery out of the territories and future territories thus strangulating the institution because it would be economically starve to death.
The North had no threat at the time that the South would invade the North but only to preserve their Confederacy and have it recognized as a sovereign nation.

Sounds like a school homework question.
Before Abraham Lincoln took office, the leaders in the south threatened him that "if" he took office, they would go to war. He became the President, and keeping to their word, those in the south who controlled state offices declared war, and tried to separate from the United States of America. Not all the people of the south were willing to separate, and so President Lincoln had to defend the Unity of the States - all of them.

There are two things for you to consider. One is the question of secession and two is the question of war between the states. Are you asking if the war was unavoidable AFTER secession or if the the main cause of the war, secession, was avoidable? These are really separate questions.
