OR should I focus on getting my own part-time job outside of the school's work study program?

So should I just forget about work study and get a part-time job instead?

I'm not sure about how your work-study works, but my school only lets me work about 10 hrs/wk max at $8.50/hr (but I usually make at least 20-25 hours). I don't think you would make enough $$ doing just work-study (unless you're a grad student, then you might make more). I would look into a part-time job as well. If your part-time job pays much more than work-study, and you could use those hours at your job, work just part time.

Good luck! Make sure to manage your time really well, so you stay on top of your studies. It can really teach you discipline.

Work-study is a need-based form of financial aid, so different students are given different possibilities for work-study. Some may only get a few hours/week, while others get much more. Also, different jobs are paid differently. Someone using technical skills, like helping in the computer labs, are paid more than those who are just sitting at a reception desk or helping out a professor with basic tasks. If work-study is the only form of financial aid you have been given to cover expenses other than tuition, and you aren't getting additional money from your family, then you almost certainly need to find some work beyond what is offered in your work-study packet.
