Firstly, the FIR you made was not regarding loss of passport but theft of passport, (check the copy of FIR what is mentioned therein). Now this first information report means that the police have to investigate & report the matter to the concerned Class 1 magistrate if that was a complaint/charge sheet relating to theft of any property informed by you. In this case since you have now recovered this property or passport, this complaint/case/FIR as the case maybe has to be informed to the relevant authorities, police or the concerned magistrate before whom this charge sheet if has been filled by the police. So the first thing you should is to meet the SHO of the police station where this FIR was made, give him writing the recovery of the passport which was reported by you as been stolen or lost as the case may be, you can always add in this that this passport was not actually stolen (if this what is mentioned in your FIR) but was misplaced by you but now has been found so you want to close this issue & take back your FIR regarding this to avoid any inconvenience in future. In case you have applied for new passport on the basis of this FIR copy, then meet the RPO of your area/district & give a similar written information to him & get the making of new passport cancelled & get all necessary changes made in their records (including blocking of this passport) regarding the theft or losing of this recovered passport so that whenever in future you use this passport their records may not show it as stolen or lost passport being misused by someone else that will put you in lots of trouble, although the fee deposited by you for this may not be refunded back to you for official reasons.

Since you had lodged an FIR, for the loss, you should end the episode in a befitting and logical manner to save yourself from future harassments of any sort, especially when the subject matter is a Passport, a very sensitive item.
As per law, when a Passport is lost you must report the loss to the Police station having jurisdiction over the matter. Now, when you have recovered it through some sort of ordeal, you must likewise report its recovery, by way of a plain letter addressed to the Officer-in charge stating in brief, the manner in which it was recovered, under reference to the FIR Number. There is nothing to fear. It is your duty, because otherwise, the file (pertaining to the loss) would remain open and the case would be treated as UNRESOLVED in the periodical reporting of the Police Station. You need not submit the letter in person. You may simply send it 'Under Certificate of Posting' or better still you send it by "Registered A/D" post to be on the safe side. But the facts to be mentioned should not be false or fabricated. If the passport was simply misplaced in your belongings, you can simply tell the fact. There is no punishment for MISPLACEMENT and RECOVERY.
Please do your duty to avoid complicacies.

1. You should surely inform Police authorities and cancel your FIR. Otherwise whenever you use this passport you will get into legal complications.
2. If you have applied for new passport
- If you got it, then you can destroy your old passport and forget it you ever found it.
- If you haven't got it, either inform RPO and cancel your application or wait for your new passport and use the new one.
If at all you have started the process of getting your new passport, and decide to use new passport, I suggest just forget about our old passport. Pretend as you never got it. But if you have not then please cancel your FIR.

Simply advise them that you've recovered the passport and they will close out your First Information Report. Had you applied for a replacement passport, you could have simply surrendered the old one with a letter stating that you recovered it.

If you have reported about lost passport to the police, it is your duty to report back to police after you had found the same. Cancellation of earlier report is not necessary. Police will record your statement and close the case.

Don't bother with the police, but if a new passport has been issued, that is of little value to you.

if the FIR is a new one then you should keep the new one and hand the old one in to the passport office.

Yes, just go down and cancel it so they can take it out of the computer. This way if you need to leave the country it will not get flagged and get you into trouble.
