I am a general manager in the Midwest for a major casual dine-in restaurant. I'm fairly good in the service industry. I received the Turn Around GM of year for the whole company. I like what I do but it can be vexing at times, to say the least. I want to move back East to be closer to family (Virginia, N.C.) Not opposed to a career change. Any suggestions? I'm 34.

That's an impressive record for your age. Can you work up to a regional promotion-- i.e. so that you manage 3-4 restaurants? Or, maybe you should find out if there's a local chain that you could manage? Good luck!

You could transfer to a franchise of the company that is in the location nearer your family...if you work at Chili's or Friday's or Ruby's or Applebee's etc...they are everywhere. Just keep your eye on the company website's career opportunities, and when a spot opens up in your home area, put in for a transfer or a promotion. Already being an employee in good standing with that company makes you almost a shoe-in. You are in a great position to negotiate for exactly what you want, where you want.

You could also stay put at the franchise where you are, and using your status as a top notch employee, see if they will fund you for more education that relates to something they can use, in a direction you want your career to go...such as hotel/restaurant mgt, master's of business admin, even culinary school, depending on the angle you want to pursue.

You could also strike out on your own, working outside the food industry, but still management. Retail, business, other hospitality related.
