1. Remove the parenthases, they are not necessary:
4x+x-3=18/.
Why? because 1+(2+3), for example, is 1+2+3.
2. Combine x.
5x-3=18
3. Add three to each side:
5x=21
4. divide each side by 4
x=21/5 or 4.2
Remember what I like to call the fundamental theorem of algebra: do onto one side that which is done to the other (AKA try to isolate x by doing the same thing to each side!)

4x + (x-3) = 18
4x + x - 3 = 18 Take out the parenthesis since the operation at the left is addition.
5x - 3 = 18 Combine like terms.
+ 3 +3
5x = 21 Add 3 to both sides
x = 4.2 Divide by 5 on both sides.

this is the problem: 4x+(x-3)=18
first take away the parentheses, they are not needed.
4x+x-3=18
now you add the 4x and the x together to get 5x and it should look like this
5x-3=18
now you take the -3 in the equation and add +3 to it to cancel it out and do the same thing to the 18 on the other side, which will make it a 21
5x=21
now from here you take the 5x and divide it by 5 to cancel the five out and divide the 21 on the other side of the equation as well and it should give you this
x=4.2
and there's your answer

4x+(x-3)=18
4x + x - 3 = 18 => remove the ( )
5x = 18 +3 => same sign add together
5x = 21
x = 21/5 => divided by 5
x = 4.2
Hope you understand!!

You start with 4x+(x-3)=18
In this case you can get rid of the parenthesis, which gives you
4x+x-3=18
5x-3=18 (add like terms)
5x=21 (add 3 to each side)
x=21/5, or 4.2
