..... catastrophes, disasters, vicious crimes, serious traffic accidents, people hurting each other etc ...... and we then read that the police overtime budget rises steeply with the need to attend so many domestic violence incidents. Is there truly something about the festive period that brings out the worst in people?

I think it is the extra consumption of alcohol. I probably drink more alcohol in the period between Christmas Day and New Years day than I do during the rest of the year and normally I have an alcoholic drink about once a month. So if someone who drinks everyday consumes more in the Christmas period as I do then they will get quite drunk

Yes I read about the increase in crime over Christmas in my local paper too. I suspect its partly down to people overdrinking again. There are a lot of people who cant handle their alcohol and they just go over the top at this time of the year.
Apart from that, people having a lot of new goods in the house (ie opened/unopened presents) encourages burglars to 'have a go' when the drinkers go out in the evening!

Holiday time is supposed to be full of love and family and reflection on the joy-filled years of the past, and when people don't have any of those things in their life, the stress and depression gets to be too much.

Too much liquor and too much stress. It makes me wish we didn't have this holiday season, to me the only good thing is spending time with my extended family, everything else I hate.
