an old beattle or mercedes at an aution will cost more than a porch. are they tring to say old mechanichs a better than now?

Hardly. But there are some cars, based on mileage & model, that can bring a premium price. Just watch the Barret-Jackson auction on tv if you get the chance & you'll see why.

Just because some of the old cars are old, there aren't many left. Sometimes, there weren't many made to begin with. Sometimes, a car has a racing history or was owned by somebody famous. All of these things contribute to a classic car's price. Modern SUVs are all over the place. I would guess that an Escalade owned by Brad Pitt could bring a premium, but the one owned by the man down the street would not.
