I've always wanted my own laptop, because the one I use, I can't get on until 7:00PM every night because it's also my dad's laptop for work. And, I sometimes need to get homework done, and I can't because the computer is not home. My birthday is January 22, and I really want my own computer..I don't really like laptops though, so I'm going to ask for a desk top..[laptops are waaay more expensive than desktops], so should I ask for one? Or would it be a bad idea? Oh, and I'm asking my grandparents for the computer, and they are sorta rich, so I'm sorta fine, but I still think that its too much. Should I ask for a desktop for my birthday? Please help! Much thanks! :]

You are on the right track. A full desktop is much cheaper, cheaper to expand, last longer, don't break or get stolen. The battery does not die, get hot, catch fire or explode. A laptop is a serious mistake, unless you have to take it on the road.
I would ask to go to WalMart and look for a special deal during this after Christmas special time. Look for an HP, Compaq, Gateway, Acer or any other brand name. Even eMachines are made better then they used to. (they are owned by Gateway now).
But if you are going to college next year; you just might need a laptop then. See how your wish fits into your life plan. Consider the fact that this desktop will be GOOD for 7 to 9 years. A laptop might be good for 4 to 5 years.
Hey, my dad turns 80 on Jan 21st. WOW.
Good luck and Happy Computing!

Askking for a specific gift is really "bad form", unless you are due lots of gifts (like for a wedding) or you've had terrible gifts in the past and the person giving knows this and has asked for suggestions.
It would be more polite and creative to ask you Dad for his old machine: at least that way shows some humility and shows him you are serious about the gift without wanting to bankrupt the family.
You attitude towards your grandparents is not good: many older people struggle to keep up standards, and may be going short to make you feel okay, but to ask then to give you something which is expensive is not a good idea.
Why not get a part-time job and come to come arrangement with your family to pay off the cost over a year or so? They could perhaps pay the deposit and not the whole amount.
You can get re-conditioned laptops: I got two for about £100 each for our charity, and if you are just doing homework, surfing the net and some graphics, they would be okay. You don't need Vista (which is still at its improvement stage) and you would be better using software that your dad knows well.
If you are determined to wring a new desktop from your family, then why not sugest getting a family PC with a large screen - say 22" - which can be used for entertainment / downloads and be a source of pleasure for everyone?

I dont think it is too much because it is something that you seem to really NEED and it will be very helpful to you. Explain the computer situation at home to your grandparents and tell them that is why you need one of your own. Desktops, in my opinion, are much easier to work with. If you were just asking for one "just because", it would be different.
Happy early birthday :D
Good luck.

there's nothing wrong with asking. I can't believe dad let you use their work computer. They should have got you or your family a separate computer for homework and other things. A work computer should only be used by the employee it is assigned to in case anything goes wrong. If you are happy with a desktop, like you say, it's cheaper and bigger screen and keyboard, and slightly upgradable. Until you go to college.

eMachines and Compaq have some very nice lower end PCs for about $550-$600, complete with Vista and good amount of memory. May I suggest something to you to save ALOT of grief? If you plan to go online with this PC, I highly recommend two pieces of software. First, I highly recommend Norton 360 Internet Security with Anti-Virus. It's about $65-70 and is as good as anything on the market to protect you online. I use it and it's caught alot of attacks and tracking cookies from getting into my PC. Second, and I love this software, is Webroot's Window Washer. It overwrites and washes all PC activity off your computer: cookies, caches, temporary files and recycle bin as well as other areas. It will even wash your slack file space. It's great for keeping the memory uncluttered. Happy Birthday!

I think that you should ask for a laptop because you actually have a reason to get one. You're not just asking for one so that you can have one of your own. Even if they say no, when you tell them that you need it for homework they will probably work out some other arrangement.

Why not, @ least they'd know what you want & what ideally suits UR needs.
Desktop's are nice, but I personally like laptops for various reasons. It takes up less space, & you can take it with you when you travel, even if it is to a different room in the house. Also, they use less electricity to run over all. 50% to 75% less power. Charging the battery takes more electricity, but still worth it.

if you are not really into mobile computing or in other words, doesn't need a computer while travelling, desktops are always better than laptops. aside from being cheaper, it is easily upgradeable and more powerful than laptops. they are also more reliable as they can easily dissipate heat and cleaning them internally is a breeze (literally, using a can of compressed air). so yeah, if your grandparents can afford, go for it. you won't lose anything and who knows, you might gain something.

I seriously recommend you get a laptop and not a desktop!!
Seriously, yes they may be expensive but you can get ones that aren't that expensive that are just as good as desktops. If you want my personal recommendation for one i would get the lastest HP Pavilion with Microsoft Vista - Very Good!!

well laptops being more is not always true.
you figure a desktop needs a monitor and keyboard mouse.
the laptop is all in one. and you can get a new laptop for 650 dollars. I would run with that.
