I think it's unforgivable in this country. They should at least stand in respect to those who have given so much to save this country even though the politicians are doing their best to destroy it. I can't speak for other countries, but for mine it's an honor to do so. My only wonder is why it's only seems to be at sporting events we do this anymore.

I believe it is their right not to do so. I myself do not say the pledge of allegiance. Dissension should not be squelched in any government; it is a fundamental right of those who are governed, IMO.

EDIT:
Since our anthem was written during the war of 1812, it is a glorification of war; it also speaks of missiles and such. People with an anti-war stance have good reason for not standing during this anthem.

Penny:
You and I would have words, and I would win the argument. My daughter has chosen, of her own free will, not to stand for the pledge, or the anthem. I stand behind her on this, and I have taken it up with the school board when she got a detention for this, and I won.

I figure they are probably a non-citizen. But really, you should stand for the national anthem in whatever country you are in - it shows respect for another culture/country.

at my kids school when they have assembly we listen to the Anthem, there are a bunch of parents that have stood on occasions, but mostly will talk or they stay seated a talk+laugh. They are very rude, and it bothers lots.It doesn't set an example for the kids,in-fact they hardly pay much notice to whats going on,they may as well not be there. Its rude.cheers :)

I don't notice if anyone is standing or not I'm always looking at the flag. So I guess I really don't care. If I did notice I would assume they have their own reason and unless I know what that is who am I to judge them.

I do not feed into people's ignorance.

But in my classroom, the kids are made to stand tall, put their hand on their chest, and look at the flag.

I then remind them that we are at war and people are dying and being seriously injured.

Unless they are physically challenged I have no respect for them. If I was visiting another country I would respect them enough to stand if they have this ritual. It doesn't mean I don't love my own country.
In my opinion if you don't love America then leave it.

I think it's reprehensible. I see no reason not to. I saw a hockey game on TV last night, and only the players stood up, and they were fidgeting so badly it was like "why bother?"
