Winchell's. It is still my favorite. The Helm's bakery truck used to come down our street. They had pretty good donuts, but their best thing was Cream Puffs.

Well we used to have one in our local neighborhood, that was called Plates Bakery. I loved and still do the Custard Snails.
more than the donuts. Those were the flat rounded pastry's with Custard and / or Cherry which I also like filling. We also had another bakery kittycorner to our grammer school and down the street from my High School. that we used to frequent a lot, of course for the same items as above.
Then as I got older we had Dianda's Italian American Bakery
in the Mission for their Italian Rum Cakes and St Honore Cakes, Champagne Cakes. These were the cakes we would buy for Birthday's Christnings, weddings and such. Dianda's retired and moved to Sacramento and recently opend another bakery close to where I live. Boy did I miss their Rum Cakes not living in San Francisco any more. But now I can get one here if I so desire. I even was telling my Mom about it and as a treat for my Birthday this year, she sent me some money and told me to go to Dianda's and get myself a cake, and I did. Still the same, and I enjoyed every bite of it.

There is one here, called Dudes Daylight Donuts. Has been here for so many years I don't know when it first opened, and I have lived here for 40+ years. Better than any Krispy Kreme I ever had.
When I was a kid, there were no donut shops in my town. The best donuts were my mother's Spicy Raised Donuts! Only kind I ever had until I grew up and left home. I still have her recipe, and when I make them, they are still the best!

My friends would hang out at Winchell's. I could put away a half-dozen glazed donuts without any problem. These days, a donut give me a stomach ache! Can't take the fat and grease anymore. I'm sure that's a good thing.

Thrift stores and yard sales! These have the best bargains! With a family of 8 kids we watched all the time for sales at the stores and we bought most stuff from yard sales and thrift stores. My grown kids still shop these places for themselves and their kids. They also shop stores for great sales. I do not have a favorite store for buying kids' clothes, though I often see really cute clothes, I won't buy them unless they are 50% or more on sale. I prefer 75%-90%! I try to do the same when I buy for myself. And of course, we LOVED hand-me-downs! I enjoy living frugally.

Our best doughnut shop was called a local bakery shop called Ayers. I once applied to be a Saturday girl in one of their shops. The result was that Mr. Ayers turned up outside our house in the early 1960's in his vintage Rolls Royce.
Presumably to interview me. I cannot, for the life of me, remember why I didn't get/ take the job. I ended up at a Haberdashery store, in the town and my first day was spent
counting buttons as it was stock taking day. On a Saturday?
I am sure now that this was a wind up. Lol!

I can not recall seeing a donut shop before I was 21.
We had bakeries... they were go in and purchase places... definitely not hang outs.
We hung out at the soda fountain/drug store and later we had a drive-in root beer stand and Dairy Queen.

My kids did! I managed hands on making, icing, filling for wholesale orders and running the coffee donut shop too.
The donuts are heaven when made in a semi small quantity with quality.
The patrons were seniors who helped me keep an eye on and raise my children since we all lived in the neighborhood.
Donuts Etc. is famous for its Uglys/Apple fritters.

Yes, I did. I was in elementary school. I can't remember the name, but it was run by a Greek family and I had a crush on their son. They made the doughnuts in the window and I used to spend a lot of time watching him, I mean them.
