As the previous person said, look at the wiki for them but what I know is, Burke and Hare used to murder people in Victorian times for money and to sell them to doctors for dissections (public ones wereespecially popular then) I can't remember the names of the characters but similar body snatchers, who stole from the Thames are possibly based on Burke and Hare (though i dont know the exact dates) and are the fictitious creations of Charles Dickens.

Grave robbers who were selling bodies to be dissected - However they then decided to make a few more corpses available by killing.

Hare grassed up Burke then disappeared.

Burke had a bad ending, he was sentenced to death by hanging, after which his body was sent to Edinburgh University to be dissected for medical research - Irony of ironies !!!!!!!!!!

However PART of his body was preserved. Some of his skin was turned into a wallet which is now in the Edinburgh Police Museum - The exhibit has a big sign in front of it saying BURKE - LOL !!!

19th century Edinburgh . Body snatchers who stole from graves to supply corpses to medical students.
Went on to murder people for the same purpose when the grave robbing became too difficult.
Hare was hung , Burke escaped any penalty by giving evidence for the prosecution

They sold bodies to surgeons to disect.

After the naturally occuring bodies were not enough, they murdered to ensure a bigger supply.

They lived and worked in Edinburgh
