This used to happen to me quite a lot after long hours working on my feet and I know the leg cramps and sometimes even certain pelvic, back and hip pain could be so excruciating and nothing worse than waking in the middle of the night feeling like something got a hold of your Achilles tendon and twisting it relentlessly like a rubber band till you be screaming bloddy murder and crying and begging CUT EM OFF!!! (until you are able to manage to jump up and do the Mexican Hat danskie at the speedoflight). But it can happen as well to other parts of the body including those with more sedentary life styles from lack of proper stretching and good exercise as well as too much exercise. Best bet is prevention by making sure you have proper work shoes and try to get some unwinding stretches and a nice warm bath and massage if you can after a long day before bed. Even if you have to do it yourself. (um the massaging I mean, not necessarily the stretches or the bath haha :)

It hurts just thinking about it! It's called a Charlie Horse cramp, but I have some advice -- I started noticing that I'd wake up just as the muscle is starting to tighten, which meant I still had time (not a lot though, only 2 seconds!) to undo what was about to happen.

So what I've started to do is JUMP out of bed as fast as possible and start walking around the room real quick, almost running. Yes, I look like a crazy person for a minute, but it works like a miracle. My leg has never once cramped up to a painful degree again and as you start walking around, you can actually feel that initial tightening feeling (the one that woke you up) quickly start to go away, and then you can go back to bed and relax. Forgot to add -- keep your leg PIN STRAIGHT as you walk, do not bend it -- that will make the cramp flair up, but if you walk straight (and keep walking!) you will go back to normal real quick.

I don't think I've ever had that happen to both legs at one time. Usually it's just one or the other. But I agree, those leg cramps are excruciating! Just thinkin' about it hurts.
I feel your pain!

That has got to be the single most horrible way of being woken up. On many occasions, I've had to rub out my own leg and the next morning I'm limping because it's still sore!

Yes, after a double shift I always get them, but I do think it looks pretty cool with the calf muscle all tensed up... When it happens i pull back my foot (to release the cramp) and look at it (because I like the way it looks)...I'm just really weird that way

hahaha!(nice that you brought this up)
i totally hate it when that happens!
when i was in high school, that happened to me almost every night and i don't know the reason why..
but last week, i had terrible cramps because i was walking the whole day and the weather is colder.
i could laugh and cry at the same time...that's a moment of insanity for me.

I know from experience what it's like to be woke up with pain. I have Fibromyalgia and I have been woke up with pain more times that I would like to count. LOL. You're right, it does hurt and it's just plain wrong. LOL.

I had that happen once when I was younger and my parents heard me screaming in pain from the back of the house.
