To Fonzie, Trujillo is yet to play on a studio album. Producer Bob Rock played the bass on St. Anger.

Anyway, Robert Trujillo can play bass on different "genres" of rock. If you remember, he was also in suicidal tendencies. So hands down, Robert Trujillo is better!

As far as Metallica needing someone, I think they need a new drummer, 'cuz lars just ain't cuttin it anymore!!!

Newsted.

He was such a great live performer, He was pretty average on bass though, but he was great on stage and he looked like a true metalhead! And his voice, his backing vocals are some of the best in Metal, he had a real growl!

Trujillo is ok I suppose but I don't think he has that presence Newsted had. He is a brilliant player though very similar technique to Cliff.

No one will ever be as perfect as the late great Cliff Burton, he was awesome, may he rest in peace.

I can't wait for the new album!

METALLICA RULES!!!!!!

If Metallica are going in a funk-metal direction, then Robert's the right man for the job. Anyone who's heard his playing with Suicidal Tendencies and Infectious Grooves will know what i mean. When i saw Metallica live at the Leeds Festival in '03, i was kind of expecting him to do a funky bass solo mid set.

I couldn't really say who is better between Robert and Jason, but i would say Robert's playing style is closer to Cliff Burton's (RIP) because, like Cliff did, he uses fingers instead of a pick.

As to who Metallica needs? They need the impossible. In other words, they really need Cliff because they haven't been the same since he passed away.

Honestly.. Cliff Burton was the best but unfortunately he died.. otherwise who knows how Metallica would have differed from how they are today!

But back to the question.. I think Jason was a better performer and blended with the image of the original band much better than Rob has. As bass players, we are yet to hear Rob's influence on the new album, but Jason was nicely polished.

Trujillo is the better bassist going away.

Newstead was better for Metallica.

is a moot point tho...

I think the world is more ready for some more Infectious Grooves now tho.

Surely Cliff Burton was one of the best bassist of the world.he was the leader of the metallica band before he die(after that james Hetfield got the leading)and you can barely feel it with the differrence between metallica tunes before Cliff's death and after cliff's death(before the death of Cliff the style of metallica was completly thrash-metal but after that it gets melow).Cliff Burton was so talented and i red somewhere that james hetfield said something like that:the bass method that cliff's using coming from space!
so i got to say there were nobody most suitable for metallica than the great Cliff Burton.
but according to your question i got to say Robert Trujillo is no metallica matherial and Jason Newsted was much more suitable.even though the Last metallica album that i heard(St Anger)kind of disappointed me but Jason Newsted is the one who metallica needs(except Cliff Burton)

Overall, I gotta say newboy Robert. I keep reading how he (Jason) never felt "in" w/ the group even after all those years. But I think Rob's mean sound kicked a.ss on St. Anger.
