I am making an American flag afghan. I am knitting several squares and I'll be sewing them together, but I don't know if I should sew quilted material to the back of each square too. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks!

I wouldn't line it either. It would take away from the integrity of the knitted material. Leave it as is and enjoy the soft and snuggly feeling of the knitted material. :)

I have made a lot of quilts from peoples clothing, and some of the patches are from sweaters or afghans. I baste the knits onto a nice-looking background fabric and then sew it to the other squares. After the squares are attached to each other, you can take out the basting. Then use it like a quilt top, with some batting and a backing.

Or, you could assemble your entire afghan and then sew that to a quilted background, but I would do that with permanent stitching, using matching thread.

I wouldn't line this thing, but if you do, tack or tie the corners to the lining. Yes, it would make it hang better if putting it on display on the wall to have a lining and hanging loop/s.

I have lots of afghans both knitted and crochet. None have linings, none have stretched out of shape, and most have been service for more than 25 years.

Using due care in washing the things makes them last much longer. Synthetic yarns seem to hold shape and color much better than wools or cottons. But I do love my wool afghans too!

Are you speaking of using polyester sheets to the back? Are you going to use it as a wall hanging or just an afghan. In any case I wouldn't put a backing on it unless you are going to use it as a wall hanging as it will tend to loose its shape while hanging and should have a backing but of some type of material. If you are using it as as afghan putting anything extra on it will be very warm and the material you are using will suffice.

Here is a link of different yarns but when following a pattern, the guage is the number to watch/ The pattern always states the type of yarn and the guage..
