I think kids nowadays are WAY spoiled. Especially around this time of year. I never got anything like iPods or video games or computers for Christmas growing up. The coolest thing to get was a bike. Which brings me to point number two: I spent the majority of my childhood outside playing. I rarely see kids out, running around in the yard or riding bikes anymore.

We had 6 kids and we dirt poor, my parents fought loudly and often. On the other hand we always had each to play with, ride bikes etc , never lonely. I do remember my mom was an excellent cook too. Youngsters nowadays need more parental control and to be taught respect and manners.

When we were young we caught all of the childhood diseases. One of my sisters and I had the mumps and chickenpox at the same time. I had three types of measles. Every home had to have a quarantine sign posted whenever anyone was sick with a contagious disease. My youngest sister contracted scarlet fever and my older sister and I had to live with our grandparents for several weeks.
My children were lucky to have immunizations for most of childhood diseases. They probably had it a lot easier than we did but now their children have to live with the threat of violence from many areas of life. There was a lockdown a couple of months at the school which two of my grandchildren attend because of three robbery suspects in the area. Life can be confusing for children nowadays.

I think youngsters today are going to have a lot of challenges and growth experiences before a lot more time passes.
The ups and downs of my childhood were mostly challenges and growth experiences, same as the rest of my life, but I think yours will be more exciting and interesting.

The downs were my family went through 2 hurricanes 4 years apart, lost everything, my Dad never recovered and died a broken man at 49 years old. The ups were traveling all over the United States with my maternal grandparents. God I miss them!
I work with some 20 somethings and their sense of entitlement amuses me, they want to start at the top, not earn it.

My dad was a carpenter, doing heavy construction. That meant we moved all over the country. I went to 22 schools in 18 states. I quit school and went to work when I was in the 11th. grade. My parents fought a great deal. Mom wanted to stay in one place. My dad felt that to make a living he had to follow the work. If there was a lot of rain in south. Calif. we moved. If the carpenters went on strike we moved to where they were not. It was awfully hard on my mother with three kids. We kids didn't mind that much. It was always an adventure. We didn't develop those real close friendships with other kids, so it wasn't that hard to move away from them. There were a lot of financial ups and downs. One of reasons I quit school to go to work.

well i had very bad school years since i was a very fat kid, 12 years of crying about that. also i was a farm kid, there is 5 kids in the family, 4 girls, 1 boy. our dad worked us very hard. and was very strict, so we got our share of beatings. us kids are all grown now and have all turned into good adults. now the kids today it is sad, today have gotten really out of hand, for one thing most get no discipline, now i don't mean that they need a beating but a good clop once in awhile should be given if they have stepped out of line. it seems the kids have no fear of the parents anymore. i have a grown daughter, i was not a friend to her when she was growing up--i was mom !. friendship comes later with the kids when they are grown. and the gadgets these kids get. way, way too many .spoiled i say. i fear what the kids will be like when they grow up. not all but many.. it's tough being a kid, and i pray that you we be one of the good ones that we can be proud of

Hard work on the farm and the belt when we misbehaved. Having 2 brothers and 2 sisters to play with was good.
