Our furnace will start running, after turning it off and turning it on, but won't stay on. It starts and does heat but it is only staying on for a few minutes and then it shuts off. We installed a new thermostat a couple of years ago (RiteTemp) that is programmable and we have done a hard reset. I have taken the thermostat off the wall to see if it would also reset itself but that didn't work. My hunch is that it is the thermostat but I am open to other possibilities. Any thoughts? Ideas?

This is a Bryant Plus 90 High Efficiency furnace. My guess is that it is over 10 years old, maybe 15 years old. The blower does come on, before the furnace starts, when it works. FYI, the way I am getting the furnace to start up is by turning it to off, waiting a few minutes, at least and then turning it back on. It will not reset and turn on, just by turning it off and right back on. It seems like it has to be off for a bit before it will actually fire up for the few minutes it has been running.

first off if it's a new furnace it should have an indicator light on the mother board that will give you the fault code. check your owners manual for the codes. if it's not, i would go buy a cheap thermostat and swap them out again. if it works, then you know it's the thermo. if not, then you know it's something in the furnace and take the new one back. i would next check out the owners manual for it. you might be able to download online if you don't have it. there should be a troubleshooting section in there. You'll prolly need a multimeter to test it out but it should walk you thru some steps to check and see what the issue is. good luck.

I think your flame sensor is bad. If you have an intermittent pilot I don't think the pilot's igniter would be part of the flame sense circuit, but it's worth checking into. Some systems have a heat detector to confirm a flame, others use a millivolt sensor, in which the flame itself becomes part of the electrical circuit. A millivolt sensor will look like a couple of stoutish straight wires or other, similar probe poking directly into the flame. A heat detector will look like almost anything depending on who built your furnace (and you didn't tell us that part, so I'm trying to cover all the bases). Some of them look a bit like a spark plug, some look like the cheap snap disc thermostats you see in the back of electric dryers, some...well, you get the idea. I hope. Drop the access panel on your furnace and look inside that panel. Usually there's a wiring diagram right there - there is on Rheem and Trane units, anyway. That ought to help you locate any and all such devices. Usually furnaces have control boards in them that will flash an LED to indicate a problem; there is probably a code that indicates a flame sense failure and you didn't know to look for it. Check and see whether that's the case. This isn't a big deal, flame sensors fail all the time for any number of reasons, usually old age and heat cycle fatigue. If you were exposed to an open flame on a regular basis, you'd wear out too. If you don't know how to test them, don't fret! Generally they're cheap and you could simply pull and replace each one of them if there's more than one. In the end it will still be cheaper than calling a service tech; techs charge $50 just to ring your doorbell. Good luck with it.

Furnace Will Not Stay On

It kinda depends on the age of the furnace also. Newer models will shut off earlier and yet still blow warm air. Is this your 1st year with it? Do you have to push a reset button to get it going again? What type of furnace..oil, hot water, natual gas,...etc May need more info to get better answers.

You are reseting the furnace control board. It sounds like you have a problem with the unit tripping a limit. This could be caused by several things. For a step by step troubleshooting guide, check out the furnace page at my source.

Be sure that your blower motor is running, it should start before everything else, if it isn't everything will run until the heat exchanger gets too hot then it will all shut down
