How do you charge an American GameBoy DS in a European outlet?

Question

I know, I know... there's a voltage difference and there's the potential to fry American electrical appliances in Europe. But I used a converter and it still won't work, even with the right voltage. What gives?

i thought the DS was region free, and only the part that you plug in was different..

if you bought a european charger in a store over there, wouldn't it work just fine?
