The main qualification for a captain in the Indian team is experience and sufficient performance to be a permanent player on the side. Very few players would have both these qualities. Dhoni wasn't very experienced, Ganguly wasn't a permanent member of the 11 and Dravid lacked consistency. That brings us to options- Tendulkar and Kumble. Tendulkar refused, Kumble accepted- story over. Concerning Kumble's efficiency as captain- the BCCI had doubts and hence named him captain only for the Pakistan series which he handled splendidly. Agreed, it was a depleted Pakistan. Still it was a series victory! Coming to the Australia series- well India lost their first match miserably. But, statistics show India have always lost their opening match abroad and history repeated itself. Besides that's just one match. Let the series complete and then we can decide about his efficiency. Thus far he has been a vibrant and intense player, a player who is always alert and it is these qualities emanating from him that makes him unique and a true leader. Frankly, I fail to understand how much more outstanding a performance Sehwag would have contributed when the in form batsman, Tendulkar, failed to make a mark. Besides is it really the fault of the captain that his batting line up didn't deliver? If my understanding of cricket is right, the captain is mainly responsible for field placements and restricting teams from attaining grand totals which he did considerably well. About the age factor i think Kumble isn't overage considering the fact that Ranatunga played till he was 40 or so.

Sharad Pawar desired some Sr player to captain. Vensarkar tried his best to persuade Sachin Tendulkar. Sachin Tendulkar refused because he does not want capataincy to affect his game. Dada Ganguly was right choice. Although because of political reasons best known to Sharad Pawar refused accepting Dada Ganguly his captain. Selection committee was left with no choice other than Jumbo. Jumbo obliged accepting captaincy. He is good strategiest, but he ruined Indian cricket team batting order by not taking Sehwag into playing elevan even after recommending Sehwag and BCCI saying Yes.

Let all dedicate this series for kumble for doing something for Sehwag.

BCCI wanted to appoint a senior and experienced player as Captain for the series against Pakistan and Australia as they felt that Dhoni is inexperienced to handle the pressure. Since Tendulkar declined the offer for captaincy and as Ganguly was not popular among all the players, they decided to offer the post to Kumble and he gladly accepted.

I believe that age is not what really matters for a player to perform in a game.
Even an 100 year old men can play a game if he has the strength, talent & experience.

Anil Kumble is a talented, experience & an agressive player who still have the capability to win a match alone for his team, he had proved it several times & he is still proving it for everyone.
So thats why he is appointed as a captain for the team, as we all know captainship is not the problem in the team right now.
Cheers!

Anil Kumble is considered as one of the most attacking cricketer of Indian cricket history.
despite of the batsman dominance in Indian cricket.
he stands tall and calls himself a very attacking cricketer.
now days Indian cricket team needed a captain which is well experienced and also is attack minded. you can check after sachin and saurav there is not a player which is an attacking player and could handle captaincy.
also anil kumble has an experience of captaining team at first class cricket.
he is the most wicket taker in Indian cricket.
in tests. and in one day he is the second highest wicket taker after javgal srinath.
he has done so much for Indian cricket, he has won so many series single handed for India.
cant we even honor him for his good by giving him captaincy which he deserves.
next time think twice before doubting anil kumble as well as before calling him over aged. because he can do things which even a 20 year old boy cant do.
hope it was helpful
thanks for reading
good day

The selectors are waiting for Kumble to come back comprehensively beaten from Australia so that they can then make Dhoni the captain.
