Sully Prudhomme. Sully was adopted as a "nom-de-plume". His real name was Rene Francois Armand.

He's a good example of how arbitrary the Nobel Prize can be. No one remembers or reads Prudhomme today. On the other hand, several of his contemporaries, who never won the Nobel, are studied in French literature courses and their books are reprinted in many countries. One example is Paul Claudel --both in France and in Canada there are lycees (high-schools) named after him.
