I just wondered, what is the difference? I thought feminism was about in the past fighting for equal rights, so that both genders have the same respect and rights. So why isn't everyone just an equalist?

I agree with 'Andrew m' cant find anything to disagree with there!
Although the answer covers only half your question.
Assuming we accept his answer as correct (and I see no reason not to)!
Then the point you are making re equalists is still valid.
My thoughts on this point are that the groups involved with Women's lib etc, is that this is the only thing they care about!
Not all of them I hasten to add but certainly a lot of them.
They probably feel it is a matter of priorities? 1st things first!
They are winning, slowly, but they are winning, I hope when they are content with the result they will in fact move on to equality for all folk regardless of colour, creed or nationality, or gender!!!
Roll on the day!

I don't think the word "feminist" was ever a good word for feminism anyway, because it's always been about equality. By the way, anyone on here who doesn't know, feminism is also about equal rights for men. So I suppose as those opposed to feminism misuse the term, we are gradually forced to switch names for the movement of gender equality?

Feminism is about all rights and no responsabilities for women. Equalism is about true equality between men and women.

A feminist is someone who focuses on women's rights. An equalist is someone who focuses on men AND women's rights.

Feminists have beliefs that extend beyond economic values - they also campaign for issues of 'recognition'. I've never ever met anyone claiming to be an Equalist so I have no idea what their credo might involve - I might assume they're the same as some religious beliefs?

feminists believe in the power of women and thagt they should not be treated any differently to men.
Equalists belive that everyone is equal, and not just that women are being discriminated against and should be treated equally.

Feminism focuses more (not completely) on the problems faced by women; equalism focuses on it all.

just look at the wording alone.

equalist = equality
feminist = selective equality (equality when it's beneficial only)
