You can buy an external hard disk and store all your pictures and music etc... but avoid using it for installing windows and programs
Advantage :-
You can transfer your pictures and share it to other computers
Disadvantage :-
It works slower than an internal hard disk

If your pictures are in jpeg format, theres no way to compress them further without losing quality of the pictures

I would suggest you to either get another internal hard disk, you can add more than one hard disk to your computer.

To Compress files I'll give you this link
http://www.daniweb.com/forums/thread4603.html
But I would do the external drive that way you have them backed up in case your drive is in the process of failing. It can and will happen you dont want to have all your eggs in basket when it does. Then you can even compress what you put on the external to save space as well. And yes it will run better if you dont have any viruses and your Hard drive is in good working condish
Hope This Helps

You can get a very large (250+ gigabytes) external hard drive that connects to your computer via USB cable. You can use it to store pictures, music, videos, etc.

If your computer is sluggish because you're filling your hard drive with pictures, etc. then yes, moving this stuff to an external hard drive will speed things up.

Yes, by all means get an external storage device. If you have a USB port, you can use a thumb drive or a hard drive. I have a Western Digital MyBook and it is very simple to use. Visit http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2704,2130259,00.asp for more information.

Get a 360G or 500G internal HDD and install it as secondary.
