Buddleja can grow into a very large shrub but unless your drains are alrady damaged it is unlikely that they will force their way into them.

It is easy to keep Buddleja under control as they respond well to severe pruning which is best done during March.

I take it you mean Buddliea - the roots on these can enter drain channels - if there is a crack or fault in the channel.

You will see these growing quite happily near drains in the road. Best way to check is to dig down gently and see if the roots are burying themselves close to the drain inlets/channels.

If they are cut them - they are quite deep rooted but on the whole are pretty harmless - they do prefer drier areas to grow in - well, mine do anyway

It would have to be a very large butterfly bush and the drain would have to be really shallow.

Yes, but buddleih roots aren't particularly invasive. Now if it was a conifer of some sort, I'd be worried!
