It depends - if it is a pic of humans and is taken in low light (eg at night time) because the iris of the eyes is not open enough, you get red eyes when the pic is developed. To avoid red eyes, use the red-eye setting on your camera - it sends out one flash of light to make the irises react and get the right size and then a second flash to actually take the pic.

If the pic is of animals, sometimes it will show red or yellow eyes when the animal doesn't actually have this colour eye. Usually this again happens in low light but is not for the same reason as human red eye. For animals, they have different bits in their eyes (someone once said they have multiple irises or something like that) and it is a reflection of that. That's why animals get yellow eyes when you shine a torch on them in the dark but humans don't.

"Red eye" is caused by the light from the flash reflecting off the retina at the back of your eye (more precisely, off the veins on the retina). Interestingly, we don't see the world as red, because our brains 'filter out' the red colour caused by those veins.

If your camers has a 'red eye reduction' function, it flashes twice: once to make the subject's pupils contract, and a second time to expose the film or digital chip.

as what Barbara said so.

But most of the camera nowadays can prevent this. Try look for that selection, normally with an 'eye' icon. Use that when the back ground is dark (camera will flash).

Or if the photos already taken, use software programs to remove it.

The light from the flash gun bounces off the retina (a tissue at the back of the eye; which is red in colouration). The "red-eye" you can see is the retina.

the flash is so bright it exposes the membrane behind your eyes. which is red. photo places and programs have the ability to remove red eye from your pictures. just ask for it.

when the flash level of camera lense is above the eye level then the eyes in snaps appears red.

The eyes are red in photographs due to the play of light. There are methods in cameras to prevent this from happening, but sometimes it fails to stop this effect.

I don't know how but that's because you looked at the camera flash. Look at the lens and not at the flash to prevent this. =)
