If it has just happened and everything else fails, try system restore.
Start/ programs/accessories/system tools/system restore.
Go back a month or so.
If this fails you can easily undo the restore

1.Click on the appropiate download from the boxes in this weblink,(from Dell Support, Dimension 1100). http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=&SystemID=DIM_CEL_1100&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid= You are the only one who knows what cd/dvd-rom drive you have installed in your computer, unless you do/did the," Have Dell search your computer," thing. How to know the exact name of the cd/dvd-rom drive, so you can get the Exact driver for it? WinXP: Start>right-click on My Computer>Properties>Hardware tab>Device Manager>click on the + sign next to cd, (or the dvd),rom drives, and write down the exact name of the drive you need drivers for. Close this window. Now go to the page I gave you, and download the driver. Run it, not Save. After it has downloaded, you should shut your computer down. Wait 20 seconds, or so, then fire it back up. Let's see what happens now. You may have to clean the cd/dvd-rom drive. When the 'eye' get's dirty, they mess up. Also it just may have seen the last of it's useful days, everything has it's mechanical limit, don't know how old your's is, or how much it's been used. Their 'lifespan' is rated in cycle hours.

hi there and happy new year
the main problem when trying to install drivers is a)making sure they are the correct ones for your specific operating system for example windows xp,vista ect
then also making sure they are the correct drivers, for example the dell dimension 1100 model may come with two different chipsets.as dell may have updated the specifications when they re-design the models
however go to http://support.euro.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs&ServiceTag=&SystemID=DIM_CEL_1100&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=,and you will find a list of the latest drivers for your dimension 1100,this includes chipset, bios, audio, ide and idie controllers and video(graphics)
before you download any of the drivers/software go to your "local disk ;c" and create a new folder naming it "dell drivers 1",this will make it easier for you to a)if you need to browse for drivers when using add hardware wizard and b)if you need to burn the drivers to disk for back up
then once you have created the folder go to the above website and download the drivers you need, and save them to the created dell drivers folder
once you have downloaded the drivers you then have a choice, you can either use the add hardware wizard to install and configure the drivers(recommended)or simly execute the specific folder and install then this way,
note:if you are installing your video drivers, although dell supply good drivers, its allways best going to either nvidia or A.T.I and download the generic drivers,nvidia(http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us) and A.T.I(http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html),however only ever get drivers from either the manufacturers website or the dell website,do not download from any so called "driver sites" as some of these can carry spyware or viruses
hope this helps however any problems let me know
good luck and happy new year !

You can't really re-install the driver for the cdrom drive. they all use the same one for the most part its just a generic driver that comes preloaded.
