lymph nodes typically swell up because there is some sort of assault that your immune system is dealing with. You may not have an active infection now in the sense that it is showing symptoms- but one may be brewing. It may not progress further than swollen lymph nodes, or it may. There are many illnesses that can be preceded by swollen glands- some serious and some not so serious. What are your risks? What have you been exposed to recently?

My biggest concern right now would be to rule out mononucleosis. This can start as swollen glands and lead to more serious illness later- not to mention its very contageous (by way of saliva).

It could also be a prelude to strep throat. If you end up with a screaming sore throat in the next few days- that's probably the culprit.

Did your doc draw blood work? That will tell us more than just looking around. Of most interest would be your white blood cell count (normal range is between 5,000-10,000 or 5-10 as most labs report it). If it's elevated that is indicative of infection either brewing or subsiding- depending on which way the numbers are changing (impossible to tell for sure without doing the test more than once). If they have difficulty figuring out the problem they can look at a WBC differential to give them an idea if the bug is a virus or bacteria.

Swollen glands aren't usually something that just appear for no reason and subside likewise- so seek another opinion or ask for additional tests just to be sure. You want to find a problem before it has a chance to make you too sick.

Good luck, feel better, and Happy New Year!

Just a quick PS- is it just the glands around the neck that are swollen or have you noticed swollen or tender spots elsewhere such as under arms or near the groin? If so- that definitely needs attention.

Get a second opinion. There is something wrong or your glands would not be swollen!

go to another doctor. The prognosis sounds a bit dodgey and difficulty in swallowing is something that should be followed up
