Should i volunteer at my high school's library for experience, etc? If i should, i'm thinking of doing that my sophomore year, but i'll also be busy with getting my driver's license and maybe a job. Any ideas on how I should continue the rest of my freshman year?

This is entirely up to you and whether or not its worth the time. Is it worth the experience? I'd always say yes, not to mention volunteering looks good on applications for jobs and scholarships alike.

In California seniors are (or were when I was there) required to do so many hours of volunteer service, usually served in your government class. I think the minimum is 15 hours which isn't much at all, and then you write up a report on your experience. So you may, depending on requirements, end up having to do something for volunteer hours in a year or two anyway.

Most of the time volunteers are more free than employees to set the hours they want to work, so just be sure you set something that you can easily live with that isn't detrimental to your studies or other goals.

For finishing the freshman year- why not start now? The year is only half over and there is plenty of time to get established. You may find you really enjoy it.

Good luck and happy new year!

As a school librarian myself I can tell you how valuable it is to have student volunteers. Although it's wonderful to be around books—and you'll certainly come across a bunch to take home—the reality is there's a ton of "grunt" work such as shelving, data entry, repair, labeling, etc, that needs doing and any pair of hands connected to a semi-intelligent brain is tremendously helpful. And while I'm calling it grunt work it's really a helluva lot better than working in the coal mines (much less grunting involved). So that gives you a sense of the work and how much you'll feel needed. As for how well it fits into your schedule, that sounds tricky to me. If getting your license is anywhere as big a deal as when I got mine, you'll really be psyched to have some time to yourself to hang with friends. A job already cuts into this in a big way. I'd say job OR library-- not both.
