Cool! It's a hispanic tradition? -laugh out loud- I do that too with my friends! We spend the new Years together but no, it's not an American tradition everyone just cheers or makes a New Year wish. We also group together with people we know to watch fireworks and it's common that if you take a date to watch the fireworks with you on New Year that they kiss if your wondering about American culture.
That's how everyone I know does it but then again it's America! There's all sorts of different cultures in America so everyone does it differently.

New year hug - geez you are getting off lightly.
Here it seems to be all about the New Year kiss.
WHY do people feel compelled to kiss rooms full of strangers to celebrate the new year?
Is saying Happy New Year just not enough any more that you have to share bodily fluid to prove that you mean it.
Sigh - - sips wine - - sigh

well...I just hug my best friend and my boyfriend....but the most important is to kiss smn at 12:00...so that u have good luck in love all year...it's a superstition....lol.....dunno.. In my cowntry (Romania) ppl hug only the close ones....not strangers...I think u should do the way u feel....If u don't like hugging ppl u don't know, then don't do it....it's simple.

Latin culture is very warm, we (Latinos) tend to be more comfortable with hugging and kissing, American culture is a lot colder in that aspect, at least for the most part.

it's a stupid question, but even stupid questions deserve to be answered. nobody is obliged to hug anybody. there is no ny hug, except you feel like huging... these are stupid superstitions or annoying habits. In Spain there are some things like these, as there are others in other parts of the world. You'd better not pay attention to them or else you'll get stupid too.

This is why I just stay at home at New Year's. The dawn of a new year tends to make people momentarily retarded.
