I dunno. My 1 gig laptop came with 2 512 chips in 2 slots, so if I wanted to upgrage, I would have to remove the chips I have.
You have to see if they filled up all your slots or not. Memory is usually very easy to get to thru one of the little panels on the bottom.
Some places will install memory for free, just to make sure they are selling you the right stuff.
My old laptop from 1998 has a memory limit of 256meg, and if I try to put more in there, it just says its not going to run and to take it out.

With the laptop turned off, and unplugged from AC power source, plus battery removed, turn it upside down. There will be a cover to remove to get to the ram slot. Generally takes a Philips screwdriver to remove a screw, in the edge of the cover. Some models have a 'torx' headed screw! Press the metal tabs out on each side of the ram 'stick', to release the ram. These are locks, and sometimes takes a little finesse to get them to release! Sometimes you have to ease one lock out a bit, and gently lift the edge of the ram up a tad, then do the same for the other side. The ram comes up at a 45 degree angle, then ease it out, at 45 degrees. Do not try to take it out at a 90 degree,(straight up), angle! Replace the ram in the same manner. Some models, have another ram slot, under the keypad,(Oh joy!), that requires you to remove the keypad, then gain access to the ram slot.
