this is terrible even for an adult let alone a child.
you should be getting at least 8 hours of sleep each night. what is keeping you from doing so?
find a bedtime routine and STICK to it. go to bed at the same time each night and make sure it's so you get at least 8 hours of sleep. if you need to be in bed by 9p for example, then make sure EVERY night you are IN bed, ready to sleep by 9p. and once in bed-stay there unless you need to get up to use the restroom. have a glass of water next to the bed in case you get thirsty.
stay off the computer and away from the tv at least one hour before going to bed-both of these things cause you to be more alert which makes it harder for you to fall asleep
prolonged sleep deprivation can cause you to become sick more easily b/c it weakens your immune system.
you could also start to slip in your school work b/c your brain doesn't function as well w/out adequate sleep
hope this helps!!

You are getting less than half of the sleep a growing 12 year old needs to function at his/her optimal level. Recent studies report that severe sleep deprivation cannot be "made-up" sleeping late on the weekends. Sleep deprivation will effect your thought processes and lower your overall life expectancy. You should talk to a doctor or try to get into a sleep clinic where they can monitor your sleep. You may have a medical condition that needs to be addressed. The sooner the better.

At your age, brain needs a rest at least 8 hours every 24 hrs. It doesn't matter if it is continuous or staggered, the point is you will have your brain rest for 8 hrs or so. If you only sleep 4 hrs in the night but take a lot of sleep in day time, thats alright. But if you only have 4 hrs sleep every night and you will not sleep at daytime then something is wrong with you, you need to see your doctor immediately.
The good thing with sleeping for at least 8 hrs a night is you keep kicking and alive the whole day, in your school, and in your play. You will miss a lot of thing of you have an scheduled sleep in daytime.

My3 summed it up, may I add that it's hard to sleep if you try to.
Luckily I have trained myself to fall asleep within 20 minutes. I did it many years ago by keeping my eyes open ( in the dark, in bed,) and when they started stinging closing them for a split second, then staring at the wall again , I repeated the process until I could hardly keep my eyes open, as I said "my eyes are relaxed, I am falling into a comfortable deep sleep, my neck is relaxed.... my shoulders are relaxed, my arms are relaxed, my torso is relaxed, my legs are relaxed, my feet are relaxed, my whole body is relaxed and I am drifting off into a pleasant carefree sleep."'
.......oops, I'm nearly asleep already, but I'll press on typing.
In other words, self hypnosis, one you practice it and master it, you can add instructions like, " I will wake up at 6 o'clock, bright and alert and have a positive and productive day" or whatever you want to achieve.
PLEASE NOTE: It takes three weeks to learn a new habit.

So all you have never heard of Thomas Edison. He took cat naps and lived into his 80's. Albert Einstein the same thing.
Sleep institutes tell us some need 8 hrs. And some need only few hours.
