What am I doing wrong? My whites don't stay white; they eventually turn yellow & dingy? And yes, I use bleach!

And, yes, I always wash in hot water and always alone w/ other whites? And how long should whites stay "white"?

No need to use bleach all the time and there is absolutely no need to wash in hot water. I've been washing all my laundry in cold water for years. The only time I use hot/warm water is if I have a particularly greasy stain that needs to be removed.
To bring your whites back to a brighter white, add some Bluo to your rinse water. You should be able to find it near the laundry powder in your supermaket. It comes in a small, navy blue bottle with white writing on it. You only need a few drops in the rinse water (don't let it get directly on the clothes) and you won't need to use it every wash; just now and again. You will love the result.

Bleach is the reason why your whites are dingy and yellow, try White Vinegar instead just add one cup to the hottest water your clothes can handle soak for about three to four hours then put through full cycle without any detergent or fabric softner added, or your next consecutive loads you may add White Vinegar instead of bleach to your fabric softner dispenser, fill to full line then wash as usual but do not add any fabric softner as vinegar whitens and softens so you will not need softner therefore you will save on softner, if you would like to add a little scent or soften your load a little more you can add a dollop of hair conditioner to a old washcloth that is folded over into a square then tossed into the dryer with your clothes and same directions apply with this method as store bought dryer sheets Good Luck !

I am assuming you separate your whites from other colored clothing:
You're probably using too much bleach or letting it sit with the bleach for too long.
Bleach does turn clothing yellow if you do that...
Use less bleach, more soap, and more water.
-------------edit---------
I saw one of the answers just now, and i have to say:
DON'T WASH WITH HOT WATER!!!! if you must, check the tag for the kind of fabric for your clothing first. It might shrink or damage the cloth if you wash certain vests in hot water. Not to say, it will wear your clothes faster in most cases.
It is perfectly okay to do it with underwear and common cotton socks, however.

don't pour bleach directly onto your clothes because they will turn yellow. if you have a washing machine that doesn't have a separate compartment for bleach then what u will need 2 do is when your machine is filling up with water (without clothes) add your bleach into the water. let it agitate for a minute, add your clothes and then detergent. this should help.

It could be your washing machine or, the type of bleach you use. Also make sure you don't mix any other color in there.
