Jesus's mothers name was Mary, not merry.

The word 'merry' in itself basically means happy, joyful, cheerful. The word is also used in reference to Robin Hood, the Merry Men of Sherwood Forest. There is also a band named Merry.

The word is also used in regular conversations, albeit not quite as often. Such examples include, "Have a merry old time" or someone going on their "merry" little way.

There are also people who are named Merry, with the same spelling.

Actually, "Christmas" is short for Christ's Mass. The greeting varies between the United States and Britain. In Britain you are just as likely to hear "Happy Christmas" as "Merry Christmas." In France it's Joyeux Noel (Joyous Noel); and it's Feliz Navidad (Happy Nativity) in Spain. "Merry" comes from the Old English "merige" or "meryge" meaning pleasant and happy.
