I suggest you look elsewhere if you are looking for real information, as many of the people who have tried to answer your question have failed by either giving their own political bias and no answer, or by not knowing enough about the history of the French in what was called Indochina, and is called Vietnam today.

Because it was "theirs" is a common thread to other posts, and possesion itself does bear on the end story of France's colony in Indo-chine..

Why were they there in the first place? It can't have been the rubber because France appeared before there was an automobile, or much need for the commodity--or for the other crops there or later introduced.

France began to occupy Indochina because it was unclaimed by other European imperial powers. The French had to take the Asian leftovers because it had spent the end of the 18th c.-first half of the 19th c. involved in its revolution, its Napoleonic aftermath, and losses of some other colonies. Meantime, the British especially had shouldered aside the initial Portugese and Spanish from their conquests--except for the US's capture of the Phillipine prize, built up its Indian base and spread into southeast Asia, and began in Hong Kong to nibble away at China. The Dutch kept firm hold of Indonesia throughout. Like France in Indochina, the Dutch preferred to stay in Indonesia too until forced out.

Siam/Thailand made its accomdations and remained itself. What was in between the French took and cobbled together the remanents of past and proto-nations (Laos,Cambodia, and the parts of the Viet's regime ) into its Indian-China substitute--"Indo-chine."

French colonialism was a very unfortunate experience for those subject to its reign. It ruled directly whenever possible, was among the more extractive imperialists, and taught allegiance to the church of France's "gloire." That arrogance never died, even after Dien Bien Phu and Algeria combined to drive it back home.

answer pure and simply is RUBBER,

rubber for the Michelin tyre company was cheap because of cheap labour , a cheap product and a new colony for France.

Nui Dat on the South China sea was called "the Riveria of South East Asia" and most of the Vietnamese spoke French,.

Vietnam was a wealth of cheap labour , a pliable and corrupt government and a valuable new resource and the french exploited it like every other colonial ruler !

in 1952 the vietnamese people had had enough of colonial oppresion and being owned by foreigners.

General Giap launched an offensive against the legion at Den Bien Phu and ousted the french from Indochina , then the Americans stepped in.

The rest is history!

Like the British "The sun never sets on the British flag" was a favorite saying. They tried to colonize everything they could get their hands on but, couldn't control the minds of people that wanted to be free and, create their own government.
They bit off more then they could chew and lost. Also like the British.
