I'm from Oregon and I'm in my second year at a community college and I really want to get away from the rain and be out on my own! I've been looking at a few of the Cal State colleges and I'm just wondering if anyone could help me out a little. Does anyone know which Cal state school is known for their teaching programs? (i want to become an elementary school teacher) Since I would be paying out-of-state tuition, which school would be cheapest? These are two of the main things I'm looking for the most. I'd also like to be near the beach so I can run with my dog :)

honestly speaking, all cal stat schools r good for the teacher's degree. only u r the one who has to make a choice. remember one thing, if u go to cal state east bay u have to be in quarter system which can put a lot of stress in your daily life....plus the professors arent good and gpa might suffer due to the lack of time.... n if u choose semester system of sf or san jose CS then u will be able to graduate smoothly with no tension about deadlines.
the cheapest is i think oakland cal state n cal state eastbay. do a little bit of research.

Any of the CSUs would be good for education, since that is one of their principal mandates as universities - to train teachers for the state. And the tuition would be the same at all of the campuses. The problem I see here is that you are looking at two inconsistent things - low costs, and near the beach. You have to know that the cost of living of anyplace near the beach is going to be much higher than anywhere away from the beach. Assuming you still want to be relatively near the beach, the only two campuses I know of which really fit that description are CSU Channel Islands and CSU Long Beach. Channel Islands, a relatively new and small campus, is right near the beach, but in the Santa Barbara area, which is extremely expensive. Cal State Long Beach is a few miles from the beach, but within a few minutes drive of one, so you could presumably live nearer the beach if you could afford it.

We just moved to Riverside, CA (It's near San Bernadino and Orange County) so my husband could attend UC Riverside. He's getting a PhD in history of education. The school has an excellent teaching program (I have a friend who's getting his BA, and he likes it a lot). We are 45 minutes from Newport Beach. Also, take a look at UC at Santa Barbara. The school is expensive, as well as housing in the area....but it also has a good teaching program.

These links should give you a good idea of the out of state tuition prices. Don't forget, it's only out of state for the first year.

HEE HEE HEE Go to Humboldt. It never rains there! HA HA HA HA HA

Best place to run on the beach with a dog tho.

Go to the counsekling office and look at the cataloges. Fullerton might be what you want if you are escaping the rain. I think they have a teaching program. I was thiking of going there, but went to Humboldt and LOVED the fog and rain. And the beaches are so much better than in SoCal.

Did my credential at Sac State in special ed. Sac State does good work in that area, not near a beach though. You should check out all the bs required to become a teacher here though. On the upside, we have reciprocity with 48 states, so, there is that to consider.
Beach=Expensive.

be sure to look for scholarships available to out-of-state students only. a lot of schools i researched will automatically give you some money if you meet a certain grade/testing requirement

You are going to have to do your own research to find what is best for you! But just remember the closer you are to the water the higher your cost of living is going to be.
