Imprint fossils are formed when something makes an imprint (say, in the mud) and that imprint is filled with something else (say, sand). When the rock erodes away, the softer material may be removed, leaving a hollow shape. The most obvious example is a footprint; but impringt fossils of shells are common, where the shell is washed or eroded away, leaving an indent that later fills with something else.
