(but question looks dodgy!)

I think you meant a + or - at the end of the second trinomial.

First, since no multiplication is pending on either set of parenthesis, we remove both sets:
3x^2 + 6x -8 -5x^2 - 8x +? 4
gathering like terms
3x^2 - 5x^2 + 6x -8x -8 +?4
which simplifies to:
-2x^2 -2x -4
Factoring out the -2
-2( x^2 +x +2)

-2x^2+6x-40 (but I suspect there's something missing between the last 2 numbers...8x4)
