When you make something, you use power, and the making of that power produces carbon, as well as the manufacturing process. A carbon credit is where you financially support an activity that helps absorb/neutralize or minimize the carbon you produced. That could mean paying to have trees planted, or supporting non-carbon producing power (solar or wind generated for example).
