Hello jenperera:

To decide on the type of cooling system you want/need, you might consider a few things.

How long are you planning to live in your current home? A whole-house system is quite expensive, and you won't recover the investment in a sale.
How long is your cooling season? Do you need a whole house system if you would only run it for a few weeks out of the year?
Do you need to cool the entire home, or just your bedroom? could you get by with a mini split system or a window unit?
Do you cook in the kitchen during the hot part of the season? Do you need to vent the heat out of the kitchen?
Is your home well insulated? This will help with maintaining a temperature different than the outside air.
Do you have deciduous trees on the south side of your home to provide shade during the hot parts of the day? (I know this does not tell you the best type of A/C to get, but it does help.
A window unit is rated for the space it can cool and the energy it consumes.
A whole home unit needs to have enough capacity to remove the heat from your home in a short period of time, and to maintain the heat removal during peak loads (very hot days). The Cost of Copper tubing. refrigerants and power should be considered as well.
A mini-split system can be used for a small space or up to three indoor spaces. They are a little more costly up front, but you have greater control over the area they cool.
Best of luck!
