The only name that has 'leon' as part of it would be Leonardo but I wouldn't exactly call that modern.
I would just stick to Leon. Its familiar but uncommon so a good combination for a little boy.

You can name him after the French town:
Lyons
It is almost pronounced the same; but not quite. It has a darkening on the O. 'or' (the British or, not the American orr)
The n kind of gets thrown away, but it is just just there.
Almost Lee - orng, but the n/ng sound is very very nearly not said. The s is silent.
You can just pronounce it Lee-or; that is still correct, but the french-french pronunciation is Leeor ^ng.
BUT, It is not pronouned LIONS (as in a pride of lions) No, no, NO!
