Spread it out on the floor and measure the same distance from the edge of one side and one end. . Mark it with masking tape or draw a continuous cutting line for best accuracy. Either way, you'll have to plan how to finish off your cut edges. If it's made like a quilt, you may be able to turn the front and back under, towards each other, and then sew with a topstitch. Or you could get blanket binding and do all four sides so it looks the same all around. If there is a ruffle, just set it aside and then put it back on after you cut.
If there is a design in the center, you'll have to cut some from all 4 sides and then decide how to finish the cut edges.

Well, I would for the short term until I am able to return the item for the right size....Fold under the amount that is too long and that folded amount goes to the back of the daybed, where the Pillows will cover it. This will solve the immediate problem. Now long term....yes you can re-size the coverlet if the type you bought is just cloth, and not an embroidered, or very detailed piece. As embroidery will unravel out and you will just really wreck the coverlet. Some polyester coverlets will also unravel faster than you can get a good answer on here. I would recommend not cutting the front hem area....but take off what you desire from the side that will not show when you are finished. That way if something goes terribly wrong....it will be hidden by the pillows along the back.

Why not return the full-size coverlet to Wal-Mart after they have restocked and either get a refund or exchange it for the twin-size coverlet you were wanting in the first place? (I'm pretty sure Wal-Mart should be restocked after the end of 2007, which is day after tomorrow -- today is 12/30/07.)
You waited this long. Is another two or three days worth the wait, in order for you to get what you want?
(If it was for someone returning to a college dormitory after the Holidays, maybe they will understand the intent and wait for the appropriate-sized coverlet...???)
Other than that, if you are a seamstress, or can use a sewing machine, it would probably be okay to just trim it and rehem it. That is, if the pattern in the coverlet is not one that uses all the existing material, which would look "off" if altered.

Depending on the pattern on the coverlet, lay it on your daybed the way you want it to hang. Put a row of pins down the other side. Go get some bias binding that is single fold. Pin this carefully onto the back, and stitch it in place. This will be the side that is barely tucked between the wall and the mattress on the back and covered with cushions. If you mess up much, it won't show much. It can be machine stitched or hand stitched on.

I don't cut or hem a full size for a twin bed. I simply use the whole thing and make it a bedspread that goes all the way to the floor on both sides of the twin bed. That's a lot easier than measuring, cutting, and trying to rehem .

Call Wal-mart and see if there is another store close to you that may have the size you want or if they can have it delivered to the store you purchased it from and make an exchange before you make any alterations to the one you have.
