It depends on how many jobs are available at the time you are looking. For example, in my field (linguistics) there are many people applying for the same jobs. My university currently has an opening, and they have had a very large number of applicants. Since there are so few jobs available in the field right now, the market is very competitive.

Publications are also very important to have on your CV when you are looking for a teaching job, especially if you are applying for a professorship that includes research.

Are you talking about a full-time faculty position or an instructor position, which generally involves teaching one class at a time? First of all, you don't stand a chance with a master's degree. You absolutely have to have a Ph.D. in Anthropology or Archaeology. Field school experience alone won't cut it - you have to be well-published as well. This is one of those areas in which there are far more applicants than there are jobs available. I know a few people who are Anthropology professors, and in one case, it took over a decade to find a full-time position in the field.
