According to Jefferson's account, "The debates having taken up the greater parts of the 2d 3d & 4th days of July were, in the evening of the last, closed the declaration was reported by the committee, agreed to by the house and signed by every member present except Mr. Dickinson."
This was the resolution aspect of the debate. The Declaration had been modied from Jefferson's original on at least two major points and many sub-points. Thus the document had to be re-written, copies made and another meeting held to sign the document. This was done on August 2 with Hancock signing large on a blank area and others filling in around his.

The Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4th, 1776. Dickens opposed the document because it provided for slavery so he elected not to sign. The Magna Carta (magnificent charter) was not signed until 1789 when European countries accepted and recognized the United States as a country.
