OK: My 3 years wedding anniversary is coming up. My husband told me tonight that most marriages fails during the first year? Is this true? What's the average lenght of time (yearly wise) does marriage last in America. Does anyone know of the statistic? Is three years longer than the average?
Thanks in advance

Edit: Not at all focus on the statistic. I am in not only 'till death but for eternity. We are going to be sealed for eternity in the temple so my marriage is not only here not earth but on the other side of life as well. But I am only curious if this is true--that 3 years is longer than most. If so, I am shock and somewhat appalled that modern society is like this. I am from the Philippines so I am curious about how things work here in the US. And marriage is one of them that I find fascinating!

Your husband is correct. The numbers go down the longer you last, so are you looking for a pat on the back for lasting 3 years? If so...congrats. But keep this in mind...marriage is FOREVER, so unless you stick together for that long, you've failed the whole purpose of promising to God that you'd stick with one another through thick and thin.

Statistics are dealing with numbers not humans,
therefore statistics do not matter because if two
people that are married do not get along they
could get divorced within days, weeks, months,
years after wards. With each couple the divorce
rate is different, why it depends upon the couple.
The best thing to concentrate on is your present
marriage and keep doing what you have been
doing to have lasted 3yrs, and oh by the way he
will have to do the same because it will take two
to make it work, I know because being married
for more than 20yrs to the same love she also has
made that happen. By the way Happy Anniversary
coming up.

I always heard 7 years, but according to the US Census, “On average, first marriages that end in divorce last about eight years” So, the answer is 7-8 years.

By the way, the website Nick Z linked to does NOT state “OVER 40% of marriages the first year end in D!” It states “Over 40% of first marriages in America end in divorce” There is a BIG difference in those two statements.

I believe that marriage is till death, call me old fashioned but that's the way I feel. I am in my late 20's - I believe for better or worse. Don't go by all those statistics it will only mess up your mind

Marriage last as long as you let it. There is no, "statistic." Don't go by "mass majority." Don't listen to that stuff, it'll mess with your mind and make you look for problems that aren't really important or there.

Your husband is wrong.
"Median duration of first marriages that end in divorce:
Males: 7.8 years
Females: 7.9 years "
http://www.divorcemag.com/statistics/statsUS.shtml
"The average duration of a first marriage ending in divorce is eight years; second marriages ending in divorce last six."
