It is very rare to see three major species interact.

As far as the buffalo returning to help the calf, that is extremely rare. Usually when a calf is caught by a lion the herd takes off. Cause they know from experience the calf is a goner.

It is a misconception among many people that animals will protect their young to the death. This is one rare time when circumstances just happen to help the calf. The crocs interfered. Lions are terrified of crocs. A lion is pretty much defenseless in the water against a big croc. The whole herd of buffalo came back. Not just a parent. Even a hungry lion is not dumb enough to go up against more than one buffalo.

So yes, this event is rare. Even more so because it is just about impossible to actually catch something like this on film.

I'm not a zoologist, nor an expert on lion attacks. But would like to respond to your question, because I've watched this video several times.

I'm a great animal lover, and find the African Lion, endlessly fascinating.

They will nearly always attack the young of any specie prey, rather than an adult: self-explanatory.

And even though the calf did finally escape, the mauling and consequent wounds it received not only from the lions but from the alligator as well, makes it extremely unlikely that it ultimately survived.

Each of the individual behaviors is common enough, it's only the close succession of each at a single location that is rare. Cape Buffalo are known for their cooperative defensive tactics, and occasionally kill human hunters.
