Unfortunately most things that are said to cause labor are myths. People say everything from sex, walking, spicy foods or any other crazy thing you've heard. Sex and lots of walking can HELP labor along if your body is good and ready but none of these will cause labor to start. If your cervix is already soften or effaced a good amount or you're dialated some along with some effacement, these techniques may be favorable for getting it into gear though. The only true known methods agreed upon with doctor's are nipple stimulation, accupunture/pressure, or cervical ripeners and pitocin. Nipple stimulation and the pressure method are methods you can do at home. Nipple stimulation naturally releases a hormone (called oxytocin I believe..not positive) and causes your uterus to begin contracting. Accupuncture or pressure also has been shown to start labor. If you have someone put pressure on the inside of your ankle just above the ankle bone firmly, it again can trigger uterine contractions. Both of these methods still take a long time to work in most cases. Someone has to put pressure on the pressurepoint of your ankle for about a minute at a time and hold it or firmly massage it off and on for 30 minutes at a time. I personally would NOT use the nipple stimulation though because even though it truly can start contractions, it can cause strong contractions that come too close together instead of spaced out in a pattern and it could cause your baby to go into distress. Babies have been shown not to tolerate this type of quick and frequent contracting well.

having sex brought on my second child or it may have just been coincidence, who knows :)
Whatever method you decide to do, please discuss it with your doctor first before going ahead. They should know about any self induction attempts you are planning on trying or they may be able to give you ideas about things they know are medically going to be better than old wives tales.
best of luck
(the only suggestion I would not attempt under any conditions is drinking castor oil as this will just make you get diarrhoea which when pregnant or in labour is going to cause more problems then help anything)

I think the bouncing on the exercise ball is used usually to help ease the pain of contractions during labor or rocking back and forth on it.
If you don't agree do more research on it http://www.howtodothings.com/family-and-relationships/a1911-how-to-ease-the-pain-of-childbirth.html

Then don't ask the question. If you know what the answers are going to be why are you asking it on a public forum where people are going to give you their answers, whether they be positive or negative?
Apparently walking helps. That's all I am going to contribute to it.
