I know someone who was brought here as a kid by his parents and fell out of status and is now here illegally. He is contemplating whether to move back to his country of origin(a European union nation) or to wait here for a reform or maybe get married and get his papers. He wants to be a lawyer, but is not sure if he can earn as much money in europe as he can in usa and weather he can adjust to a new country all over again. What do you think?

Get married to get citizenship papers? That's like going to Antarctic to get an ice cube. Why did he loose status, and how is he working legally now...or is he? He had status already, it shouldn't be too hard to get papers. Is he afraid he'll get deported. I don't think so. All the talk about deporting illegals and nothing is being done. I would think he's safe. If nothing else, he could make a call from a payphone and ask the question. That way they can't grab him. As far as the money...with all the ways to work around the legal system here, a lawyer can make very good money if he gets into the right area. But he needs to get legal so he can pay taxes and suffer like the rest of us.

Tell him to just stay here, and apply for a change of status, Also tell him to enter the annual green card lottery. He may get lucky. Seriously, the government is in no hurry to send anyone back. With a million plus, undocumented residents, Congress can't even agree on the simplest detail. I don't think he has anything to worry about. It's going to be expensive they just had a drastic increase in filing fees in July. Another sign, the US is not serious about immigration reform.

If he is out-of-status, he should be able to stay on for a while before anything happens. I'd suggest he stay as long as possible or until an opportunity presents itself in his home country.
