It's not that we are afraid of Iran. We aren't. It will be a long time before they can pose the kind of threat to the United States that the old Soviet Union (or even today's Russia) could.
What we are is as mad as all hell at them for the humiliation they dealt us in the 1979 hostage crisis. For 444 days they illegally held our diplomats as hostages and played on President Carter's restraint to treat our country with maximum insolence. They have had their hand in fomenting war and turmoil in the Middle East ever since and have cost American lives by supporting elements of the Iraq insurrection.
There are some in this country who yearn to teach the Iranians a lesson. But if wiser heads prevail the United States will let the Iranian theocracy self-destruct, as someday it must, without any help from us.

Someone has claimed the gospel of Luke. However, Gospel or even the bible leads people to heaven (Luke 24:52&53); nothing about politic or the world. Of course, the revelation did prophesy the destruction of the world; but it was about a holy war between God and man. When man would unified and able to created a worldwise union, then God would send angels to destroy man's work.

Nevertheless, the unification of planet Earth is still a long way to go.

I don't think Americans would scared on Iran. It just a matter of resource. Bush only got a few months to go. His successor would be highly likely Obama. If Bush send army to Iran, Obama would bring them home, it is very bad for army who are trained to win the war: not playing with politic. In addition, Bush run-out of excuse, and he need reasons to get the appreciation of Alliance and able to get through UN.

Nevertheless, U.S. Airforce has got some 30k pounds bombs (classical type, not nuke) which are capable to destroy all underground facilities in Iran.

Propaganda. Oil. Not really most Americans even problem is not even there, The Belief IN Human Supremacy is what has been taking away the rights of everyone including Iran. Afganistan and Burqas in it are but part of the reason Rights do not protect people. The Belief In Human Supremacy is what people should be afraid of of themselves what they can do with this belief. Humans believe themselves to be part of a Master Race destined to use everybody and everything for monetary gain killling those who oppose this.

Americans aren't too pleased with the leadership that is in Iran. As for the Iranians themselves they're like any other people, raising families, going to work, paying taxes, and living their lives out there.

The leadership that goes "Death to America" really doesn't instill a lot of love for him here.

It is over the top. Fortunately many Americans are beginning to see right through the reasons why war was pushed with Iraq and why it's being pushed with Iran. The AIPAC appointed Wolfowitz, Lieberman and Norman Podhoretz and the like have been exposed for the traitors that they are. Our foreign policies have been dictated by a foreign lobby group, but people are becoming more and more aware now.

The non sense of "they hate us for our freedoms" isn't being bought anymore by most informed Americans. People are going to demand a lot more honesty before sending their loved ones to harm's way.

Edit:
Oops, we have one Giuliani fan here who doesn't agree! lol...

It's really a nice question. You said "Americans" ... perhaps not. The commoner has no such notion. But the 'Foreign Policy-makers' and the business lobby might have spread such a scare. It is the "interst group" who often fix the fate of the people. Perhaps the policy makers have lost contact with the countrymen who might have to suffer for "their" decessions.
