I imagine there IS a certain percentage of Women who do take up Prostitution as a matter of Choice... -Afterall, this is a crazy World, & "it takes all kinds..." But it's a "Risky Business"- to get into... -& I doubt VERY MUCH that many Women "retire" from it & then go on to collect Social Security... .. .

I wanted to share the story referenced. It's not my answer, I have no business answering because I don't know anything about prostitution. But I'm sure that there are a small fraction of women who become prostitutes by choice, a smaller fraction of women who appear to enjoy it, an even smaller fraction that really do enjoy it, and an even smaller fraction that didn't regret it once they stopped.

In a few cases, maybe, like in the case of the happy hooker. But generally speaking, I doubt it. In Eastern Europe women are desperate and resort to such jobs due to many reasons none of which is pleasure. In W. Europe and Israel most prostitues are from the Eastern block - Russia, Moldova, Romania etc. Most of them are tricked into those jobs and treated worse than slaves.
In the US, I guess there might be some who do it for "pleasure", but do you really believe everything you see on Maury?... Ironically, even here, many women prostitutes end up dead, drugged up and people don't even care about them, as if they were't even human. Something tells me that in those cases the women did not chose that way of life for "pleasure".
Personally I know two girls who went on Springer. They said they were strippers. At the time, they were. Later, they got into prostitution and drugs were involved from the get go. Last time I saw one of them in a bar she was high as a kite, crying in the bathroom and telling me that it's been 5 years since she's had a boyfriend. Do I think she was happy? No. Do I think she chose that way of life because she liked it? I know she didn't. It's too bad because she was a very bright girl.

From my understanding prositution is illegal in the US and the UK however in Australia it is legal. we have legalised brothels that are very luxurious and offers a discreet entry and these businesses advertise. For example the Daily Planet is a well known melbourne icon that offers excellent working conditions for the sex worker. Then there are other escort businesses that cater for the client to have home visits from the sex worker. Then there are the street workers who work the streets. We also have government funded organisations that advocate for the rights of sex workers and educate them of health issues such as HIV. Because prostitution in Australia is a legitimate way to earn an income no one is forced into anything and it is considered the individual who choses. A lot of individuals work in the sex industry because they have very limited skills or have come from poverty others are just too lazy to go and get training. THe legitimate brothels and escort services do have a lot of university students who work to get them through their eductaion - the conditions are good and the hours are flexible. A lot of single mothers also work in the industry where the conditions and hours are promoted as a bonus. There is really no taboo with prositution in Australia as its legal and i am sure that individuals (men and women) feel comfortable with who they are and their sexualality.

There are probably as many reasons for women taking up prostitution a for taking up accountancy, or clerical work.
Making a living is number one for any work, after that the list of reasons is probably only limited by the number of people doing the job.
However, are the pleasures of prostitution largely illusory? Not everyone gets to be Julia Roberts!
It's probably not that enjoyable walking the streets in innappropriate clothing on dark, rainy nights looking for a stranger in a car to pick you up, stick his p3nis in your face and pay you $30 bucks before dumping you, speeding off and leaving you to make your own way back.
Of course, after divvying up with whoever's in charge of your strip of pavement, you might get $15 out of that, which means you better be ready to rock and roll again pdq.
Not my idea of fun, but you go girl!
Cheers :-)

I've seen shows on television with women claiming to enjoy being prostitutes. Those prostitutes are invariably completely free to choose who they service or not.
If casual sex with someone you just met is not a problem, and you are able to do it on your own terms, I expect anyone would consider it.
However, if prostitution were legal, I think it would harm many businesses that benefit from the willingness of many [unattractive] men to spend money on *anything* that they believe will help them get sex.

See and that is just why they should legalize it, let those who want to spend their lives on their backs or knees do it and get paid for it, maybe, just maybe, we will get some of the rapist and child molesters off the streets. If being part of the oldest profession works for some women, hey, they are working, they aren't stealing anything from anyone and come on ladies, in all truthfulness, wouldn't you rather your man, safely and responsibly, see a prostitute than take on a mistress? God Bless.

Yes it is true. To give you a hint, if they grew up someplace where they had choices and choosed to be a prostitute its likely they enjoy earning money with sex. If they offer some kind of fetish, like or similiar to a domina, its almost certain they enjoy it and are really into it, although I assume that at times its still only for money sake, while at times they enjoy it, as with everybody who turns a passion/hobby into a buisness. As for women who have limited choices, it probably wasnt their desire to be a prostitute, but cleaning toilets wasnt eithier and prostitution pays better.

I would say yes and I would say that someone like Heidi Fleiss is an example of that. There is a lot of money in that business so surely that is a big pull for some and for those that have sex addictions, the money is only a perk I bet!

They like the money. Have you seen the kind of blokes they have sex with? There might be a few who enjoy it occasionally, but I don't believe that anyone is going to enjoy being with even half of the blokes they see. If you are too picky you're not going to make any money.
Edit: It also feeds an important part of a mans fantasy to give the impression that they enjoy it. Some men want to believe that, even of women they pay.
