My Dad and Christmas

True story

During World War II, my dad was in the infantry in France. He had a sweet tooth and his favorite thing was chocolate peanut butter fudge. At some sacrifice due to rationing, my mom was able to get the sugar, cocoa, butter, and other ingredients for fudge to send to him for a Christmas present. At the time, she sent them, my dad was assigned to driving trucks at a supply station so he had access to a field kitchen, But by the time he got them, he had been transferred to the front and was in the middle of a frozen battlefield. They arrived Christmas Eve in tins cushioned by popcorn (the forties Styrofoam). He had no way to cook it. However, by evening, there seemed to be an undeclared truce and the commander allowed them to start fires. My dad and his buddies jerry-rigged a tripod over the fire. Using his helmet as a pot and his bayonet knife for a ladle, he made the fudge. Once it was done, my dad and his fellow soldiers sat around the fire eating the stale popcorn and candy. For the next fifty two years until he was too ill to do it any longer, my dad made fudge on Christmas Eve and gave it to the ones he loved. For him, it symbolized the message of Christmas, caring, sharing and peace. He has been gone for six years now but I carry the tradition forward. Belated Merry Christmas to you !

A jump rope chant that I learned from my little sister:

Fudge, fudge!
Call the judge!
Mother had a ba-bee!
Not a boy,
Not a girl,
Just an ord'nary ba-bee!

(Well, you asked.)
