Then why can cows and buffalo cross breed, horses and donkeys cross breed, dogs and wolves cross breed, and yet humans and chimps cannot?

Also, why is it that Human DNA is more closely related to swine and mice than chimps?

Pops, just so you know, it was not me who thumbed you down. My sis is an immunologist and I have the highest respect for your education.

linlyons,

My sister is an immunologist. She told me that is why they use mice for studies with medicine and such. Their DNA is very very close to that of a human.

It's because we have a different number of chromosomes, which happened when a genetic mutation merged two chromosomes and the branch that ultimately produced humans was formed.

Edit: I love how I got a thumbs down for what has been scientifically proven. If you examine human and chimpanzee DNA under a microscope you see that chromosomes 2 & 3 in a chimp are combined to form chromosome 2 in humans. If the chromosome number doesn't match then they can't have offspring.

Edit 2: Tom, random mutations occur all the time, and when you factor in selective breeding as in choosing a mate, you get all sorts of possibilities. Just look at all the different types of dogs that have been made in just the last few thousand years from mutation and selective breeding. I know that it was done with human control, but it's just an example of what you can do over a short period of time. Now apply the same principles over several millions of years and you get the possibilities for early human ancestors branching off from early chimp ancestors.

Human's and mice and swine can't cross breed either. Would you really want to cross breed with a monkey? Despite us already having a chimp in the White House, there's a whole lot of other creatures between the monkey and the human that are no longer living on the planet. The dog and wolf are still of the same genus, so is the horse and donkey; cow and buffalo. You can't say that about the chimp and human. Actually, from the reading I've done, the chimp and human are very closely related and have only one or two genes off from one another. But we are also on totally different branches of the genetic family tree which in fact is not about us evolving from monkeys but just being genetic cousins of some kind. I'm not sure what kind of question you are asking or your intention but it doesn't seem like a real question. It seems more like a rhetorical one that has some kind of hidden agenda. If it is a real question, perhaps it belongs in the science Yahoo answers board.

It's not impossible for chimps and humans to breed, in fact research suggests the opposite is true.

I don't know where you got the part about swine and mice but it simply isn't true.

Quote From Pops:
"It's becasue we have a different number of chromosomes, which happened when a genetic mutation merged two chromosomes and the branch that ultimately produced humans was formed."

That theory has already been proven totally impossible with a chance factor of 1 to 1million to the 100th power. Meaning the number is so long it's impossible to print it out.

Science so far with it's attempt to prove that happened has done nothing but prove that it is impossible to happen.

No we did not come from Monkeys. I know that is hard for some to believe. Just check it out instead of taking face value.

Why would you want to breed with a chimp? Of the primates the most vicious would be people and chimps,we are not very nice to each other, neither are they.

There's that and...why are there even chimps anymore? I guess they weren't good enough to evolve into humans so they had to stay chimps....bummer.

Pops McGee nailed it. And if you have any interest in mating with a chimpanzee (which would probably kill you) or a pig or a mouse, please see a psychiatrist as soon as possible.

I think there are some cross-bred chimps/humans already amongst us.
