the nicest place to raise children is where the best school system exists, where there is a premium placed on learning, where various forms of entertainment are available like water sports, skiing, music and club activities. Also a place close to large metropolitan cities which support museums, theaters, and interesting sites.. Where one is not too far from the ocean or the mountains.

I'm raising mine in Utah, and with the dominant religion, it's a pretty relaxed state.

But, everywhere you go, there will be crime and negative influences.. so probably where you're at is as good as any.

good luck~ i'm glad your so concerned for your childrens well-being that you'd be willing to up root!

Many people say in a small town, but I think its in the suburbs of a major city. You get the good schools, know your neighbor quality of a small town with the opportunities of a big city. In small towns far from major cities, there is a feeling by the kids that they are so limited, so there is a lot of teenage drinking. I think you need to provide your kids with a place that they can feel secure in, but also one that gives them opportunities to grow.

Speaking from my own experience, Cape May County, NJ. The schools are decent, crime is low, you are close to several big cities, but not too close. The beach is not far away no matter where in the county you live.

I must respond to this question, since one person just said that Brooklyn ISN'T the nicest place to raise kids.

Well, I live in Park Slope, Brooklyn, NYC, and it's kid central. CLEARLY, all those parents who moved here, BECAUSE it's such a great place to raise kids disagree with that person.

There are so many kids here that the few single people complain about it.

But what's not to love? There are great public schools here, including one of the top schools in NYC - PS 321. There are tons of singalongs, mommy and me classes, and other kid centered activities. Many great public playgrounds. A world class park - Prospect Park, as beautiful as Central Park (designed by the same men, and they thought Prospect Park was more beautiful!) A world class museum within walking distance. The lovely Brooklyn Botanic Gardens within walking distance. Quiet, tree shaded streets, and great stoops for kids to play on and get to know their neighbors. Beautiful architecture (I know this doesn't sound kid friendly, but I remember my oldest daughter running up to all the carved lions on the houses and talking to them when she was a toddler coming home from the playground. It felt so good to raise her in such a beautiful place!) Liberal minded people as our neighbors. Great diversity - including tons of people who are from all over the world, families made up of more than one race and other kinds of diverse families.

In short, it's a child friendly, stimulating, beautiful environment. Not for everyone (thank goodness!) But many, many people prefer to raise our kids here. And remember, this "neighborhood" is as big in population as a small city elsewhere! So I'm not talking about a few blocks with a few hundred people on them. About 50,000 people live in Park Slope (depending on how you define the bounderies.)

it depends if you want a big city or small town enviroment. Knoxvill TN was really nice, with lots of activities for kids, for bigger cities, try Denver CO

defenitly its not Brooklyn in nyc.

well ... that was my answer but now i have to edit it and add more to reply for the person who didn't like my answer,i think her answer is the fourth one following mine
what you said is really great and beautiful but how much it costs to live in park slope now and the one who asked the question sounds like she's starting her family life.
talking about myself when i was a single college student who likes to mingle i was livin in park slope (5th ave & 11th st) in a studio apt. paying $600 a month 6 years ago now i heared its $2200 a month!!!!!!
i can't deny that i was crazy about the city and all what it offers from bars ,clubs and museums but i was 23!!!
cumon when we grow up and have kids we get so scared about them and need to raise'em in peace and quite and try to forget about ourselves and what we like in the city when we were singles
then after we implant the good seeds in them when they grow up and go to the city and college they're still carry the values and never forget what we teach them ...the same what your family did with you in new jersey where you come from.
by the way..i born 'n raised in brooklyn and get mugged twice in park sope....just be careful
think twice that's my only advice
and tell me how many gallons of gas your car burns after looking for a parking spot hours and hours ...................................!
I think the name should be Park sloppy. Enjoy the pollution and mice in the city
and thanks for the thumb down ....:)
